Large carnivore expansion in Europe is associated with human population density and land cover changes

چکیده
Aim The recent recovery of large carnivores in Europe has been explained as resulting from a decrease human persecution driven by widespread rural land abandonment, paralleled forest cover increase and the consequent availability shelter prey. We investigated whether population density changes are related to relative probability occurrence three European carnivores: grey wolf (Canis lupus), Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) brown bear (Ursus arctos). Location Europe, west 64° longitude. Methods fitted multi-temporal species distribution models using >50,000 points with time series cover, landscape configuration, protected areas, hunting regulations covering 24-year period (1992–2015). Within temporal window considered, we then predicted habitat suitability for throughout Europe. Results Between 1992 2015, increased Eastern Balkans, North-West Iberian Peninsula Northern Scandinavia, but showed mixed trends Western Southern These were primarily associated increases decreases density, and, additionally, mosaics cropland natural vegetation. Main conclusions Recent appear have altered pattern whereas protection level did not play role. While projected largely match observed carnivore populations, found mismatches expansion wolves Central where factors included our may played dominant This suggests that carnivores’ co-existence humans landscapes is limited availability, other such favourable tolerance policy.

Population expansion and individual age affect endoparasite richness and diversity in a recolonising large carnivore population
The recent recolonisation of the Central European lowland (CEL) by the grey wolf (Canis lupus) provides an excellent opportunity to study the effect of founder events on endoparasite diversity. Which role do prey and predator populations play in the re-establishment of endoparasite life cycles? Which intrinsic and extrinsic factors control individual endoparasite diversity in an expanding host ...
متن کاملUnderstanding Driving Forces and Implications Associated with the Land Use and Land Cover Changes in Portugal
Understanding the processes of land use and land cover changes (LUCC) and the associated driving forces is important for achieving sustainable development. This paper presents the LUCC in Portugal at the regional level (NUTS II) from 1995 to 2010 and discusses the main driving forces and implications associated with these LUCC. The main objectives of this work are: (a) to quantify the land use ...
متن کاملLower Bone Mineral Density is Associated with Intertrochanteric Hip Fracture
Background: A better understanding of how bone mineral density and vitamin D levels are associated with femoralneck and intertrochanteric hip fractures may help inform healthcare providers. We asked: 1) In patients age ≥ 55 years,is there a difference in quantitative ultrasound of the heel (QUS) t-score between patients with fractures of the femoralneck and those with fractures of the intertroc...
متن کاملLand use and land cover spatiotemporal dynamic pattern and predicting changes using integrated CA-Markov model
Analyzing the process of land use and cover changes during long periods of time and predicting the future changes is highly important and useful for the land use managers. In this study, the land use maps in the Ardabil plain in north-west part of Iran for four periods (1989, 1998, 2009 and 2013) are extracted and analyzed through remote sensing technique, using the land-sat satellite images. T...
متن کاملWhat is land cover?
Much geographic information is an interpretation of reality and it is possible for multiple interpretations to coexist. This is unproblematic for the research community but, as the numbers of users increase through initiatives resulting in data integration on an unprecedented scale, such as E-science and GRID, issues of information meaning and conceptualisation become more important. We explore...
